Party slams Nik Aziz for scrapping Maulidur Rasul celebrations in Kelantan

Kelantan Umno has criticised PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat for manipulating the Maulidur Rasul celebrations to gain political mileage with its coalition partner, DAP.

Its liaison chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the Maulidur Rasul celebrations had been observed for so long in Malaysia that it had become a cultural practice among the Malay Muslims.

Mustapa, who is also International Trade and Industry Minister, said Nik Aziz’s opinion that the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday was not as important as the month of Ramadan belittled the celebration.

It also showed that PAS could easily compromise on Islamic religious issues with DAP, which had earlier been reported to have cancelled the celebration in Penang, he said.

In Kota Baru on Sunday, Nik Aziz announced that there would be no Maulidur Rasul celebrations in Kelantan this year.

He said the state government had decided to scrap the event because it was not as important as the month of Ramadan.

“There is nothing to celebrate in the Maulidur Rasul as it does not contain any fadhilat (virtues) compared to the month of Ramadan where Muslims have to strictly observe discipline.

“Personally, I do not even celebrate the day. Maulidur Rasul is a day for Muslims to create an Islamic atmosphere where they stay, nothing more.”

He was commenting on criticism against the Penang government for purportedly sending out letters cancelling this year’s Maulidur Rasul celebrations.

The state later clarified that the procession would go on as planned.

Nik Abdul Aziz, who is also the PAS spiritual advisor, said that the true spirit of maulidur (observance of Prophet’s Muhammad’s birthday) was the Islamic programmes implemented by the PAS government in Kelantan.

“I have been given the mandate to manage Kelantan via an Islamic administration socially, economically and culturally and to me this is the meaning of maulidur that should be implemented the year round.”

He urged the people to practise visiting each other to foster a better relationship with all ethnic groups.

He added that it was part of Islamic teaching to do so as it was also practised by Prophet Muhammad during his time.
